Function Words in Discourse
ECTS Credits: 1,5 Language: English Duration: IX semester Status: electives Course description: The course is designed to familiarize students with the use of function words in the English conversational discourse. Quite often, the speech of students who study English differs from that of natural speakers. One of the reasons can be explained by the fact that students of English avoid using function words which have no direct equivalents in the Ukrainian language (e.g. after all, in fact, anyway, actually). At the same time, these small language units are indispensable in natural communication as they make speech natural and authentic. The course deals with a systemic description of function words of the English language, reveals their semantic and pragmatic peculiarities and offers students practical recommendations how to use them in speech. The lecturer is Candidate of Linguistics, Associate Professor L.M.Volkova.
